Is Romeo believable?

At the start of the play Romeo is so in love with Rosaline he is miserable. One glance at Juliet and he forgets Rosaline and falls in love with Juliet!

After meeting Juliet he follows her home and waits outside her bedroom window! He talks about marriage after knowing her no more than a few hours.

The next day he marries her!

What do you think about Romeo?

In my personal opinion I would say that Romeo is both believable and unbelievable. For example in Act 1 Scene 1 , he is head over heels in love with Rosaline. Romeo says that 'sad hours seem long'- Benvolio then assumes he is talking about love troubles and tries to help. Later on in this passage Romeo speaks in mainly oxymorons for example- feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire etc. This shows that there is something wrong. Also ,'Love is a smoke rais'd witht he fume of sighs', meaning that he sighs at what could have been.

Later in Act 1 Scene 4, Romeo referrs to love being like a rose ,
'Is love a tender thing? it is too rough, too rude, too boisterous and it pricks like a thorn,'This means that basically If you are too rough with love- too rude or too boisterous, it will hurt.

Before he entered the Capulets party he refferred to the stars- basically saying what is meant to be will be.

At the Capulets' party, he forgets his woes as he sets eye upon Juliet, he had another worry which was worse he had been spotted by Tybult- who is not impressed as a Montague has came to a rivals party ( to make fun of their traditions).Tybult is told to not cause a commotion lady Capulet calls him a princox at which he is thoroughly offended. Romeo sets out to find Juliet and pursue his thoughts of how beautiful she is.When they are alone Shakespear uses language to represent religion( pilgrims, holy ...). After the party as the guests are leaving Juliet asks her nurse who he was- she didnt know so she went and asked and was amazed to hear Juliets reply once she had told her he was a Montague.

From here Romeo leaves and goes underneath Juliets balcony,(Act 2 Scene 2) he talks of how Juliet is the sun- the light in his life.Juliet does not realise he is there until later in the scene.

I do not think Romeo is a beleivable character. He gets over Rosaline pretty quickly when he falls for Juliet. He becomes a bit obessed with Juliet, he knows her for about 2 hours and follows her to her room, and when he's there speaks of marriage already!

I dont tink romeo is a beliavabl charachter because right at the beginning of the play he is so in love with rosaline that he is miserable. He then meets juliet knows her for a few hours follows her home and is allready talking about marriage.

Romeo... ...

No Romeo is not believable. How can one be deeply in love with Rosaline and then just throw it away with one look at Juliet?

And come on... Stalker... He follows her home after meeting her at a party... ... And then goes on about Marriage...

Just my personal opinion

i dont think Romeo is a believable character because he falls in love with Julietat first sight without even knowing her. He then asks her to marry him in just a few hours with out knowing her that well.

He also forgets about Rosaline when he sees Juliet and doesnt even remember her again

I think that Romeo is both a believable and an unbelievable character in the play.

It is not unheard of to change your attention from one to another so quickly as Romeo did with Rosaline to Juliet.

However, Romeo's actions whilst in the presence of Juliet(ie. the talk of weddings, the actual wedding after knowing the girl for mere hours) is entirely unbelievable and is probably a device to - somewhat - 'hurry up' the play.

I think that romeo is unbelieveable as he does get over Rosilina very quickly and then loves Juilet and follows her home after knowing her for a couple of hours then all of a sudden he marries her. but i do tink that he does like juilet very much. i think that he thinks f he marries her it will bring the tewo families together.

i dont think romeo is a beliveable character beacuse he was so in love with rosaline then he just suddenly changed his mind after meeting juliet at a party for 5 minutes, then followed her to her room then sunddenly wants to marry her ......

In my opinion romeo has *some* qualities of believable love.
the speech of the time was much more advanced then what we have now
so instead of saying....... want to grab a curry and get married,he explains how much he loves her,and juliet being very young and naive does'nt exactly say no you're bonkers.

some of the situations that he is put into are not believable.
for example after knowing juliet for a barely few moments in his eyes he is in love with her....but a few moments is'nt exactly a excellent start for a lasting realtionship.

the situation with rosaline is somewhat believable because that was a sort of faulse love, more of a crush.but with juliet he is taken with her straight away.

but shakespear wrote his plays like a modern soap or dramatic televison programme.all the elements for a good time are in romeo and juliet, honour, love, death, anger
so they aren't exactly going to be like real life unless all of manind changes overnight...which is
a little bit unrealistic......
